SINGLE REVIEW: Swallow the Sun - Innocence was Long Forgotten

It feels like an age since Swallow the Sun released Moonflowers. The fact it was only three years ago says more about my constant whirlwind of a life than anything else. The Finns are majestic masters when it comes to the melancholic, and the news that they had released a new single was very exciting.

Swallow the sun

It’s a stunning single. Innocence was Long Forgotten continues the long tradition of dark despair, yet despite what the band say, this song lit me up on a particularly miserable day. It’s drenched with heartache, crafted with the usual combination of crunching riffs and harrowing misery, yet always delivered with such poise and elegance. With excellent production and mix by Dan Lancaster, mastering by Tony Lindgren and recording by Juho Räihä one could almost accuse it of being polished. Mikko Kotamäki’s rich and enveloping vocals work fantastically alongside the swirling guitar work of Juha Raivio and Juho Räihä, ably supported by bassist Matti Honkonen and drummer Juuso Raatikainen.

The band comments “All the new Swallow the Sun music felt like an ice dagger through a sleeping heart. So, we wanted to work with a powerful producer, Dan Lancaster, to push this dagger even deeper into this heart of ours.” 20 years into their musical journey, Innocence was Long Forgotten represents a new chapter in the band’s evolution. It’ll be interesting to see what comes next. For now, check out the video and follow the band on their socials.
