EP REVIEW: Sons of Liberty - The Details of the Devil

Sons of Liberty - The Devil of the Detail

Back in July we covered Sons of Liberty’s latest single Tertulia Time, from their excellent The Detail Is in the Devil album. Ahead of their forthcoming 10th anniversary UK tour, the Southwest band has released a special The Details of the Devil EP to commemorate the milestone.

Containing recent singles and two unreleased tracks, this is a great taster to whet your appetite before the shows. Beginning with Time to Fly, this is all the evidence you need to grab a ticket if you can. It’s a rousing anthem that shows the quality of the band. It’s a ripping, powerful track which gets the blood flowing and the head nodding. It’s followed by the moody Turn the Tide, a song full of emotion and which connects with the band’s Southern Rock influences.

Sons of Liberty

It's been a turbulent couple of years for frontman Russ Grimmett who made his debut on the album. He explains what Sons means to him. “Come the end of 2022, I was in a VERY dark place. Losing my hero suddenly (my dad) and going through months of not really knowing who I was or where I wanted to be. 8 months later I was asked to audition for a band I’d only recently heard of…it turned out to be exactly what I needed and exactly where I was meant to be. The boys took me in with the biggest arms, warmest hearts and we can’t wait to celebrate with all our fans and new ones on the road”. Light the Fuse and Tertulia Time need no introduction, both songs crackle with electricity and the singalong elements that make the band such a joy to listen to and watch.

Sons

New songs though? Oh yes, we get two here. First up is This Town, a boot stomping groover that grabs the attention and is sure to be a standout tune on the tour. “We’re always being asked when there’ll be new songs, so…ask and ye shall receive as we love to give our fans more as they deserve it!” Saving possibly the best to last, Full Force Five begins with an intense drum intro before the instantly recognisable Sons of Liberty swagger rolls in. It’s a fine song with a darker edge than some of their other songs. A tad heavier as well, I cannot wait to catch this one live. Ten years in any business is a great achievement.

Ten years as a band is a solid statement. With intentions of going for the next ten years, it’s fitting to leave the final comments to founder members Fred Hale and Andy ‘Moose’ Muse. “What an absolutely amazing 10 years we have had. When we first had the idea to put the band together, we would never have imagined what we were getting ourselves into! We have been able to tour and play festivals in Europe and right across the UK alongside many of the greatest rock artists that inspired us, and most of the brightest stars of the current rock scene, many of whom we now class as peers and friends. Has it really been 10 years? Hell yeah!”
